"We Are The World" lyrics

"We Are The World"
(performed by USA For Africa)

There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, when it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone somewhere will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know
Love is all we need

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So, let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Well, send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So, let's start giving
Oh, there's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out
And there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well
Let's realize, oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one

[Repeat with ad-libs until the end:]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So, let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

This song was a charity single meant to help the victims of famine in Africa. All the profit (over $60 million) was donated to Ethiopia, Sudan, and other poor countries.
"We Are The World" was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones.
This single was the eighth consecutive number-one single on the Hot 100 for Lionel Richie, who achieved the same feat during previous seven years.
The original idea of the USA For Africa project belongs to social activist Harry Belafonte who thought about a benefit concert featuring black musicians. In late December 1984, he called artist manager Ken Kragen, who invited Lionel Richie to write a song and asked Quincy Jones to produce. Richie got Stevie Wonder involved, and Jones enlisted Michael Jackson. It took about a month for the project to be released.
The creation of a band for one song was inspired by the group Band Aid, put together to record "Do They Know It's Christmas?" in 1984. Band Aid included Bono (U2), Phil Collins, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and Sting. Those famous artists came together in one day to record a song.
In order to get many artists together to record this single, the day was chosen when the American Music Awards took place, on the 28th of January 1985, since all of them were in town for the awards. The recording was done after the ceremony at A&M Studios in Los Angeles and took 12 hours to complete.
Actor Dan Aykroyd (he was a singer in the band The Blues Brothers) took part in the chorus of this track because he was invited to represent the movie industry.
