"What I Am" won a Daytime Emmy Award in the "Outstanding Original Song – Children's and Animation" category in 2011. The song was written for the "Sesame Street" TV series.

This song was also recorded for the Sesame Workshop Resilience Initiative, "Little Children, Big Challenges", in 2012.

Bill Sherman, co-writer of the song, recalled about the collaboration with will.i.am on this, "I sent it to him, and he totally reworked it, in the sense that he took out my bridge, which I loved, and...took the tune and made it something."
