Joy, by definition
Is an emotion of great satisfaction, delight, and well being
But as I put forward this notion
Consider that there is no magic potion
No message in a bottle you'll find in the ocean
That rolls up on the shore of your life
With an answer to the question you had as a girl or a boy
That says, 'Here, here is the secret to finding joy'
Because joy isn't found in a bottle, it's not found under a tree
It's not found in matching pajamas, or eggnog, or concerts with me
Or holidays away, somewhere sunny and hot
Though when the snow falls and the shovels are out
It's safe to assume that's where joy is not
From what I can tell, joy doesn't turn up as a yell
But instead as a voice, from the bottom of the well
That's lodged deep down inside, it quietly moves
Through our jealousy, our anger, our sadness, our pride
And if we let it speak louder, we start to realize
That it's more like a lens that takes over our eyes
And brings in the truth that what matters is who
Not the what's or the where's, but the proverbial 'why's'
We look for somebody else to bring joy to our days
We try to buy happiness in a multitude of ways
With beautiful packaging, boxing up stuff
But what if the joy that the world needs is us
What if we started our mornings with love
Expressing our deepest gratitude, then saying it out loud
What if we let it fill our souls like the best cup of coffee
But not so we can keep it, no, we let it spill out
On our friends and our family, and those we don't know
And we laugh as the joy in our life starts to grow
Imagine with me, that joy was a seed
That eventually, would turn into the most beautiful tree
If you ask when the best time to plant it would be
I'd say 10 years back but the next best time?
Easy, it's now
Tonight, amongst all the noise
Let's dig down deep in the soil and discover that joy
Is bubbling up, and it wants to be shared
Don't worry none of us think we're prepared
And in my mind it doesn't matter what you believe
Joy isn't expensive, it's for all and it's free
It doesn't come to the world, it was here all along
It dances with love and it writes the best songs
It's in us my friends, and when we share this thing
That is when heaven and nature will sing
