"Shinigami Eyes" is the first track released from Grimes' EP "Fairies Cum First". The song was premiered on January 26, 2022, accompanied by a music video featuring Jennie Kim from Blackpink. "Thank you so much to my epic team and especially my favorite popstar Jennie who literally fixed my hair on set at one point cuz the wind blew my bangs vertical haha," shared Grimes via Instagram her experience about working together on the visual.

The title of this song is a reference to the comic and animation series "Death Note". To tease the fans, Grimes posted a binary representation of the phrase "shinigami eyes" on Twitter in a text post on the 20th of January, 2022. "'Shinigami Eyes' comes out when people are sufficiently hyped haha, label says I gotta hype people but I'm shy and I hate social media, so we'll see... It's a metaphor for when the AI invading the simulation to amuse themselves the way Shinigami invade the human world," she explained on Discord.
