John Legend debuted "FREE" at the 2022 Grammys as a tribute to Ukraine fighting off Russian attacks after Russia had begun the invasion on the 24th of February, 2022. He performed the song after Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, had shared a video statement about his war-torn country. John was accompanied on stage by three Ukrainian artists: bandura player Siuzanna Iglidan (originally from Odessa, Ukraine), singer Mika Newtown (who sang a verse in Ukrainian), and poet Lyuba Yakimchuk (who closed the performance with sort of a prayer) of which Legend wrote on Twitter, "It was an honor to perform FREE tonight along with Lyuba Yakimchuk, Siuzanna Iglidan, Mika Newton, and our incredible choir."

"FREE is a prayer. It's a prayer for peace throughout the world. A prayer for all the dispossessed and dislocated. The refugees of every nationality, religion and skin color, longing for a safe place to live and flourish. Those who are left aside and forgotten," explained John Legend in a series of posts on Twitter on the 4th of April, 2022. "I wrote FREE after a week of seeing the horrific images of the senseless, brutal invasion of Ukraine by a regime with no moral justification."
