The Lumineers' frontman Wesley Schultz said about
Johnny Cash's music legacy,
"It's part of our culture. It's woven right into it. If you pull that thread, it might fall apart."
John Carter Cash sent Wesley Schultz two poems that Johnny Cash has never put to music, and Schultz began working on the arrangement. He recalled, "I found a progression that was a descending melody that I really fell in love with. How he was writing felt like eternal lyrics. They weren't place-able, they weren't direct references to a year or a certain way of talking."
