The title of "Circle The Drain" came from a conversation Robb Flynn had had with his friend who just had broken up with his girlfriend. The friend mentioned that he and his girlfriend were "circling the drain". One of the early titles was "Treading The Water".

Robb Flynn explained, "It's a sad song about relationships gone bad, but accepting that it's over, and making yourself move on."

The track features a guest drummer Navene Koperweis (Whitechapel, Animals As Leaders).

The cover of this single was created by Christian Sampson. He had compiled some photographs representing mental disorders. The one for the cover is called "Panic".
