Maluma and The Weeknd teased fans about their possible collaboration on Twitter on the 4th of November 2020: The Weeknd posted a picture of them together. "Hawái (Remix)" was released two days later accompanied by a music video filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Jessy Terrero of Cinema Giants.

Maluma's manager, Miguel Lua, explained in an interview with Billboard on the 5th of November 2020, that a decision to make a remix came after the original "Hawái" achieved good positions on charts and several international artist asked to make a remix. Lua said, "On October 5, I got a call from Sal, thinking it was about Doja Cat, and he told me that The Weeknd was considering doing something for the Latin market and that Maluma had five song options to send him."

"I have always admired the Weeknd so it feels nothing short of a dream come true to have him collab on 'Hawái (Remix),'" Maluma said in a press release. "He brought another flow to it and sang in both Spanish and English which is impressive." This song marks the first collaboration between them.
