The Neighbourhood surprise-released "Why'd You Have To Leave" as a single on the 6th of November, 2026, although the song's snippet was first posted by Jesse Rutherford about five years earlier. The song was inspired by two events in frontman Jesse Rutherford's life which both happened on Christmas eve: his father died and the band took a break. Jesse told his band mates in an in-studio video shared on social media one day prior to the single's release, "That's like so family-based. [...] Putting out this song for us in this moment, for our listeners, too, is probably a pretty cool and also weird-in-a-way thing. [...] I feel like I get to have something to—like—share."
