"I'm Just Ken" was first heard in a promotional advertisement for the film "Barbie". The ad was published on social-media platforms on the 10th of July, 2023. The song was officially released on the 21st of July, 2023.

Mark Ronson who co-wrote this song with Andrew Wyatt told Entertainment Weekly about working with Ryan Gosling, "We hadn't met before, we just went into the studio and talked about music. As he started to get warmed up, I was like, 'Oh my god, this guy is gonna murder this song.' And of course he would. He's Ken. Who would understand this song better than him."

"I'm Just Ken" feature Slash (Guns N' Roses) and Wolfgang Van Halen (Mammoth WVH) on guitars. Composer and producer Mark Ronson told Variety, "I sent [Slash] the song and he was like, 'This is a good song... cool. I'll play on it.' He kills it, he plays the solo at the end and the rhythm parts. It's wonderful." Van Halen wrote on social media about his contribution to the film's soundtrack, "...two major spots where I do some soloing. One in particular is pretty cool because it's the big song that Ryan Gosling sings and Slash plays on it as well!"
