U2 released this song ahead of their first ever concert in India in December 2019.

The title means "non-violence" in Sanskrit. A. R. Rahman explained, "Ahimsa requires courage and strength. A quality that is impervious to weapons or power. It's a mission which is most needed to heal the modern world and it is incredible timing to collaborate with U2, with their amazing legacy, to revive this movement."

A.R. Rahman's daughters, Khatija and Raheema, provided additional vocals for "Ahimsa".

This song includes couplets from the Tamil text "Thirukkural".
