Andra Day explained the meaning of this song by stating, "'Rise Up' is saying one piece isn't better than the other—when this part is struggling, I'm gonna help you. 'Rise Up' is telling you we are all equal."

NPR noted that this wasn't meant to be an anthem, "but the rousing song resonated widely with activist communities after its 2015 release — the Black Lives Matter movement in particular".

This song was featured in the Serena Williams' Beats advertising campaign in September of 2015.

"Rise Up" has frequently been covered on talent shows, such as America's Got Talent, American Idol, Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor UK.
