"Tomorrow Never Knows" lyrics

"Tomorrow Never Knows"

Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream
It is not dying, it is not dying

Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void
It is shining, it is shining

Yet you may see the meaning of within
It is being, it is being

Love is all and love is everyone
It is knowing, it is knowing...

... that ignorance and hates may mourn the dead
It is believing, it is believing

But listen to the colour of your dreams
It is not living, it is not living

So play the game "Existence" to the end...
... Of the beginning, of the beginning
Of the beginning, of the beginning
Of the beginning, of the beginning
Of the beginning, of the beginning

John Lennon drew the inspiration for this song from the book "The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead" by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert that was an adaptation of "Tibetan Book of the Dead".
The title of this song came from Ringo Starr's phrase "Tomorrow never knows" that he said in a television interview in 1964. He told then a story about a curios moment at British Embassy in Washington, DC, when one of the guests had cut off a portion of his hair.
This song showcased The Beatles' sound experiments which were very unusual for popular music at the time: filtered voice, non-standard drum rhythm, tape loops, modified sounds of sitar and tambura. Some critics opined that it was one of early examples of psychedelic and electronic genres.
Sixteen tape loops were mixed to create very saturated sound. Producer George Martin said later that the final mix would be impossible to re-create because the loops had been laid over the music in a random way.
