Scott Stapp wrote this song after he'd got to know that he was going to become a father. In an interview for songfacts.com in 2013, he said, "I think back to the spirit and the somewhat naiveté, just that brutal honesty that that song expressed as me being a young man and approaching fatherhood for the first time."

The singer of the band expressed, "I'm beginning to see why that song struck a chord with multiple generations: because it touches on a feeling and sentiments that are universal for fathers, and for parents in general."

A foundation set up by Scott Stapp to help children and families is called after this song: With Arms Wide Open Foundation. A limited edition single was released in September 2000 to support the foundation, with all proceeds of the single going to the charity.

This track won the 2000 Grammy for Best Rock Song.
