"Take Me Home, Country Roads" lyrics

"Take Me Home, Country Roads"

Almost Heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

All my memories gather 'round her
Miner's lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

I hear her voice in the morning hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road, I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads

Take me home, (Down) country roads
Take me home, (Down) country roads

Writer(s): William T Danoff, John Denver, Taffy Danoff
Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert and John Denver wrote this song about the state of West Virginia. In March 2014, it became one of the four official state anthems of the state.
Bill Danoff made up this song while driving with his then-wife along Clopper Road in Maryland. Although he was from Massachusetts and that word would also fit the song as "West Virginia", he later explained, "I didn't want to write about Massachusetts because I didn't think the word was musical. And the Bee Gees, of course, had a hit record called Massachusetts, but what did I know?"
"Take Me Home, Country Roads" reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in August 1971.
