Meghan Trainor explained the meaning of this song saying, "It's about when you have those nightmares where your loved one passes away... and you realize that you're not promised tomorrow, so you're going to love them like you're losing them."
"Like I'm Gonna Lose You" had been written years prior to the album's release, and Megan Trainor had had no intention to include it in the album, until her uncle, Burton Toney, forced her management to give it a listen.
The track was completed by Megan Trainor and Chris Gelbuda in his home studio in East Nashville, Tennessee, when he tried different melodies on a guitar. Gelbuda recalled, "She dug it and it just worked. We built the track together: she sang the vocals, and I worked at it for weeks."
The collaboration with John Legend was announced in September 2014, after Legend heard the song (he and Megan Trainor have the same management) and said, "I love this: I want to be a part of it."
Fifth Harmony covered the song at the 2016 Billboard Women in Music ceremony. The performance was one of the group's last with their original lineup, before member Camila Cabello left the group in December 2016.
