"Even Flow" lyrics
"Even Flow"
Freezing
Rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again
Oh, feeling
Maybe he'll see a little better, set of days, ooh yeah
Oh, hand out
Faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar, oh yeah
Oh, dark grin
He can't help, when he's happy he looks insane, hm yeah
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Oh, someday yet, he'll begin his life again
Life again, life again
Kneeling
Looking through the paper though he doesn't know to read, oh yeah
Oh, praying
Now to something that has never showed him anything
Oh, feeling
Understands the weather of the winters on its way
Oh, ceilings
Few and far between all the legal halls of shame, hey
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Oh, someday yet, he'll begin his life again
...Ah, whispering hands, gently lead him away
Him away, him away
Yeah!
Woo, ah yeah... fuck it up
Hey man, you got a dollar?
Come on, just some spare change, man, I know you got
Well, God bless you, man, God bless you
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh, he don't know, so he chases them away
Oh, someday yet, he'll begin his life again
Oh, whispering hands, gently lead him away
Him away, him away... yeah!
Woo, ah yeah

Writer(s): Eddie Jerome Vedder, Stone C. Gossard
Unlike most songs from the "Ten" album, recorded in just a few takes, "Even Flow" was an exception, requiring much more attention. Guitarist Mike McCready stated, "We did 'Even Flow' about 50, 70 times. I swear to God it was a nightmare. We played that thing over and over until we hated each other."
Song's lyrics by Eddie Vedder describe the experience of being a homeless man. Once he introduced the song by saying "I thought I'd throw in a bit of street education while you still have an open mind. Right across the street there's a little homeless community that lives under the bridge. You should just know that those people ain't all crazy and sometimes it's not their fault."
