"COMPLETE MESS" is the lead single from 5 Seconds Of Summer's fifth studio album. The song was premiered on March 3, 2022, accompanied by a music video directed by Lauren Dunn.

According to drummer Ashton Irwin, the title of this track is a reference to a phrase "YOU COMPLETE MEss" which vocalist Luke Hemmings had on his T-shirt during the band's tours. Hemmings explained on the 3rd of March, 2022, "It's self-produced, self-written song by the band. Self-inspired, self-indulgent. [...] It's just done by the band and Michael produced it. [...] It feels like a triumphant moment for the band."

The band mates said about this song recorded at Rancho V in Joshua Tree (Michael Clifford's own home studio and Dragonfly Creek in Malibu) in a statement, "This new music is so authentically us. It's exactly the kind of music we want to be making right now and it's a good song to be able to reconnect to our fans after such a long time of not releasing music. We can't wait for everyone to hear what we've been working on."
