"when we were young" lyrics

"when we were young"

One, two, three, four

We're separated by a margin of a greater degree
The same flesh and blood but in a different lane
I read the remedy too but my words, they still sounded the same

When we were young
We thought we had the whole world figured out
Now all we do is speak in tongues
We play a losing game
Only now we hear the shouts fading out
We flew into the sun
We flew into the sun

I'm dedicated to the shadow that's been following me
It caught me counting the cards
I guess the rules remain
Oh it was heavenly then
But the devils were calling my name

When we were young
We thought we had the whole world figured out
Now all we do is speak in tongues
We play a losing game
Only now we hear the shouts fading out
We flew into the sun

Is there something in your eye?
Did you fall or were you just on a high?
Everybody's so afraid they could die
But they never once said
"Thank God we're alive"
Is there something in your eye?
Did you fall or were you just on a high?
Everybody's so afraid they could die
But they never once said
"Thank God we're alive"

When we were young
We thought we had the whole world figured out
We flew into the sun
We thought we had the whole world figured out
Now all we do is speak in tongues
We play a losing game
Only now we hear the shouts fading out
We flew into the sun

"When We Were Young", released with its music video on the 20th of April, 2022, was the first taste of new music following the band's 2021 album "For Those That Wish to Exist" and had come ahead of their UK arena tour started in May of 2022.
The band's drummer Dan Serle, who wrote these lyrics, also directed the track's video. He explained, "'When We Were Young' is a song that recognises what is gained and what is lost as we get older. As the world unfolds around us, we can become overwhelmed by its endless complexity. When I was 20 I thought I had the whole thing sussed, today I'm pretty sure I'll never understand reality. We lose our innocence as we age, and although fatalism and cynicism can creep in, we also begin to shift our focus toward gratitude for existence and for those that we love."
