Paul Simon explained in the documentary "The Making of Bridge Over Troubled Water", "I have no idea where it came from. It came all of the sudden. It was one of the most-shocking moments in my songwriting career. I remember thinking, 'This is considerably better than I usually write.'"

This song was partly written in the same house on Blue Jay Way in Los Angeles where George Harrison wrote "Blue Jay Way". Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel rented the house in 1969 while Garfunkel was busy acting in the film "Catch 22" in Mexico at that time.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 and won five Grammy Awards in 1971. It also topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and New Zealand at the same time.
