"First Of May" lyrics
"First Of May"
When I was small and Christmas trees were tall
We used to love while others used to play
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by
Some one else moved in from far away
Now we are tall and Christmas trees are small
And you don't ask the time of day
But you and I, our love will never die
But guess we'll cry come first of May
The apple tree that grew for you and me
I watched the apples falling, one by one
And I recall the moment of them all
The day I kissed your cheek and you were mine
Now we are tall and Christmas trees are small
And you don't ask the time of day
But you and I, our love will never die
But guess we'll cry come first of May
When I was small and Christmas trees were tall
Do-do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do
Don't ask me why, but time has passed us by
Some one else moved in from far away
Writer(s): Barry Alan Gibb, Robin Hugh Gibb, Maurice Ernest Gibb
"First Of May" was released as the lead single from the album in 1969. Robin Gibb wanted
"Lamplight" to be the lead single, but the record label put it to the B-side instead.
Maurice Gibb recalled, "Barry and I were sitting at the piano. And I started playing the chords, and Barry started singing, 'When I was small and Christmas trees were tall' and started singing along with it. We put a demo down with a vocal and we kept the piano track."
This song was a top-ten hit in the UK and it reached number 37 on Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.
This track was featured in the film "Melody" in 1971.
