"Words" lyrics

"Words"

Smile, an everlasting smile
A smile could bring you near to me
Don't ever let me find you gone
'Cause that would bring a tear to me

This world has lost its glory
Let's start a brand new story
Now, my love, right now
There'll be no other time
And I can show you how, my love

Talk in everlasting words
And dedicate them all to me
And I will give you all my life
I'm here if you should call to me

You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say

It's only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away

You think that I don't even mean
A single word I say

It's only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away
It's only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away
It's only words, and words are all I have
To take your heart away

This song was originally written for Cliff Richard, but he wasn't making an album at the time, so Bee Gees recorded it themselves.
According to Robin Gibb, the idea of this song is that "words can make you happy or words can make you sad".
"Words" was released as a single in January 1968. It was dedicated for their first manager Robert Stigwood. Barry Gibb stayed at his place when this song was written. Gibb recalled during a 1996 VH1 Storytellers TV show, "I didn't know it wasn't on an album — that's strange how it used to work in those days. We used to bang singles out one after another."
Elvis Presley performed the live version of this song on his concerts in the late '60s and early '70s. His version is included on the live album "Elvis in Person at the International Hotel" (1970).
This song was written for a film called "The Mini-Affair" (titled "The Mini Mob" in England).
When Boyzone made a cover version of this song in 1996, Maurice Gibb declared it the best ever cover of a Bee Gees song. That version topped the UK chart.
