Gracie Abrams wrote "Unlearn" after she had broken up with her boyfriend in 2019. She explained on TikTok on the 17th of March 2021, "We were dating for 3 years. He was my best friend :) He went to school in New York then I moved there for college. It felt like we shouldn't be together anymore which made me feel sick. I would sit in the park and write for hours. Nothing felt right. I broke up with him basically out of nowhere. It was cold and painful. I really hurt him. It was fine for a few weeks even a little relieved and then it hit me and I couldn't sleep anymore. I used to throw up out of guilt, or I wouldn't eat for days and then get 3 milkshakes for dinner. I tried to reach out to him but he said he needed space. Every day I would write down everything I wanted to say to him. It almost always hurt and it still does. So I made this song and put it out :)" The song and its music video were released on the 24th of March 2021.
