This song is a midtempo rhythm-and-blues ballad. It was initially a classic rhythm-and-blues song until Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, one of the co-authors, changed the arrangement, chords and added falsetto vocals.

Beyoncé said about her singing ballads on this album, "The music and the emotion in the story is told so much better. It's a better connection because you can hear it and it's not all these other distractions. I really wanted people to hear my voice and hear what I had to say."

Critic Colin McGuire of PopMatters commented that this ballad is more similar to the work of pop singer Celine Dion than soul singer Aretha Franklin.
