"77" lyrics

"77"
(feat. Avril Lavigne)

Going out after midnight
Two vampires on the street
People stare when we walk by
'Cause they're scared of you and me

I'm not the same as them, I never was
Never gonna let us in to their club
Know you gotta give it back as good as you got
'Cause this is our time and this is our shot

She said she don't wanna run anymore
Don't care about going to Heaven
She said do it like we did it before
Fight back like '77

Hey, hey, he-e-ey
Fight back like '77
Hey, hey, he-e-ey
Fight back like '77

King's Road every weekend
They hate us and they don't know why
No love from policemen
Too fast to live, too young to die

Here come the teddy boys and the skins
I can see them walking up on the bridge
No, it's not a fair fight, it never is
But you gotta swing first and you better not miss (Hey-hey)

She said she don't wanna run anymore
Don't care about going to Heaven
She said do it like we did it before
Fight back like '77

Hey, hey, he-e-ey
Fight back like '77
Hey, hey, he-e-ey
Fight back like '77

It's our lives in their hands
Same old thing it's always been
Sometimes we lose, sometimes we win
They show their teeth, we kick them in

She said she don't wanna run anymore
Don't care about going to Heaven
She said do it like we did it before
Fight back like '77

Hey, hey, he-e-ey
Fight back like '77
Hey, hey, he-e-ey
Fight back like '77

Fight back like '77
Fight back like '77

Writer(s): Nick Long, Tommy English, Steve Stevens, Billy Idol
The title of this song refers to the year 1977 when punk rock was at the peak of its first wave. "77" is the second track (following "Still Dancing") unveiled from Billy Idol's 2025 album "Dream Into It", his first new music in over a decade since 2014 album "Kings & Queens Of The Underground".
Billy Idol told in an interview with Youngblood Vlogs about working with Avril Lavigne on this one released on the 22nd of April, 2025, "It's fantastic. She did an incredible job. I mean: it was good with me singing it, but it got three times better with Avril on it." He also added, "I'm singing about the time when I was young and how England was very much polarized and people were kind of at war with each other and the different polarized groups were fighting each other. [...] And that was our time. That was when we were kind of fighting for our existence in a way, fighting for a future which they were telling us there was no future. That's what '77' is all about."
