The main source of inspiration for this song was Bill Ward's breakup with his first wife.

The melody of this track was composed by guitarist Tony Iommi, who was experimenting with the instrument in the studio reportedly being up all night snorting cocaine. Bassist Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics.

Ozzy Osbourne re-recorded the song as a single taken from his "Live & Loud" (1993) album.

Eminem sampled "Going Through Changes" for his eponymous track from his album "Recovery" (2010).
