Geezer Butler clarified in an interview in 1992, "When I wrote 'N.I.B.', I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it 'Nib', after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it 'N.I.B.'. By the time it got to America, they translated it to 'Nativity in Black'." The shape of Bill Ward's goatee looked like a pen nib to the other band members.

Some of the US releases of this song had the song's distinct introductory bass solo titled as "Bassically". Geezer Butler produced it with the help of a wah-wah pedal.

Lucifer is the protagonist of this track. Geezer Butler, who wrote this lyrics, explained in the 1992 documentary "The Black Sabbath Story: Volume One", "The song was about the devil falling in love and totally changing, becoming a good person."

A series of Black Sabbath tribute albums, "Nativity in Black", was titled after the roumored meaning behind the title of "N.I.B.". For instance, Ozzy Osbourne and Primus recorded a cover of "N.I.B." for the "Nativity in Black II" tribute album.

2013 "The Hangover Part III" film features this song, but it wasn't included on the film's soundtrack.
