This song is similar to the song "Helpless" by Neil Young recorded in 1969. Dylan and Young admitted it and even played both songs during one concert in 1975.

Guns N' Roses covered this song on their album "Use Your Illusion II" (1991) and performed it at Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in front of 72'000 people in 1992. The concert took place at Wembley Stadium in London.

Ted Christopher recorded a cover version with a new verse in memory of the schoolchildren and teacher killed in the Dunblane massacre in 1996. Bob Dylan officially permitted to do that cover. Mark Knopfler and the village children singing the chorus contributed to this song. The version reached number-one position in the UK.

Warren Zevon recorded the cover of this song for his album "The Wind" (2003) while suffering from lung cancer. He died soon after the album had been released.
