"One Love / People Get Ready" lyrics

Bob Marley & The Wailers Lyrics

"One Love / People Get Ready"

One love! One heart!
Let's get together and feel alright
Hear the children crying (One love!)
Hear the children crying (One heart!)
Saying, "Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel alright."
Saying, "Let's get together and feel alright." Wo wo-wo wo-wo!

Let them all pass all their dirty remarks (One love!)
There is one question I'd really love to ask (One heart!)
Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own beliefs?

One love! What about the one heart? One heart!
What about the—Let's get together and feel alright
As it was in the beginning (One love!)
So shall it be in the end (One heart!)
Alright!
Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel alright
Let's get together and feel alright
One more thing!

Let's get together to fight this holy Armageddon (One love!)
So when the man comes there will be no, no doom (one song!)
Have pity on those whose chances grows thinner
There is no hiding place from the Father of Creation
Singing!

One love! What about the one heart? One heart!
What about the—Let's all get together and feel alright
I'm pleading to mankind! (One love!)
Oh, Lord! (One heart) Wo-ooh
Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel alright
Let's get together and feel alright
Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel alright
Let's get together and feel alright

Writer(s): Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley
Bob Marley wrote this song during Jamaican elections in December 1976 when the country was divided between Michael Manley's People's National Party and Edward Seaga's Jamaican Labour Party. Marley was the most popular person in Jamaica, but he tried to stay politically neutral and helped people find shelter in that violent time.
This song was first recorded by Bob Marley's original band, "The Wailers", in 1965 and was released as a single. That version was in a ska style whilst the version on "Exodus" is reggae and rhythm and blues.
The song contains an interpretation of The Impressions' song "People Get Ready" written by Curtis Mayfield. That's why the title is compound, though the original recording of the song did not credit Mayfield's song and was simply titled "One Love".
The music video for this features several cameo appearances including Paul McCartney, two members of Bananarama, Suggs and Chas Smash of Madness.
The song was featured in the film "Marley & Me" (2008) in a scene when it plays on radio and inspires the main character to name the dog Marley.
