Jim Steinman, this track's producer, said in an interview with Playbill, "...with 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', I was trying to come up with a love song, and I remembered I actually wrote that to be a vampire love song. Its original title was 'Vampires in Love' because I was working on a musical of 'Nosferatu'."

Bonnie Tyler was hesitant that this song would be radio-friendly with its length of more than seven minutes. That's why it was shortened for radio to 4:30.

The music video for this song was filmed at the Holloway Sanatorium, near Virginia Water, Surrey, England.

The most successful song for Bonnie Tyler, it topped the UK Singles Chart and was the fifth best-selling single in 1983. The single was certified "Gold" by the Recording Industry Association of America soon after its release and became "Platinum" in 2001.
