"Silhouette Shadows" lyrics

"Silhouette Shadows"

On TV, watching from my Boston street
Into someone's window as Nixon resigns
Good, good thing I'm tall
Going back, to my third-floor walk-up
Sounds in the air, the S&M couple beating each other
And screaming that summer right above my room

Watching morning sitcom shows
Every day, in the Schiff's house, when I knew they were away
Making sure they'd never notice I had been there
Couldn't believe I was doing this
Was a needed break from the music school grind

Silhouettes and shadows
Ancient scenes and cryptic dreams
Silhouettes and shadows
I sort of remember in a dim light
In the sharp outline, a cardboard cutout
Shaded recollections
One life in reflection

In a practice room, a student
Stops to listen, stays for a while
Then knocks, comes in, introduces himself
Tells me to come to Atlanta
To meet his big-time producer
We continued to meet and plan

I flew down there to hang in their scene
Tried to get me to do blow
And, and much more
I wouldn't do it, instant ostracism
Left in two days, don't know what I learned from that
Maybe nothing

In third grade waiting for the intercom
To tell us when the buses arrive
On a Friday afternoon, November 22
Interrupted by a TV voice
Telling us the President's been shot
Then kids erupted in glee

Shouting, "Hooray, Nixon can take over!"
Ms. Nimmo jumped their ass and tore 'em down
I was really alarmed and confused
Watching the children parroting parents' views

Silhouettes and shadows
Ancient scenes and cryptic dreams
Silhouettes and shadows
I sort of remember in the dim light
In the sharp outline, a cardboard cutout
Shaded recollection
One life in reflection

Silhouettes and shadows
I sort of remember in the dim light
In sharp outline, a cardboard cutout
Shaded recollection
One life in reflection
