"James Dean in that Mercury '49" is a reference to the film "Rebel Without A Cause" where the character of Dean drives a 1949 Mercury.

The classic film "Smokey and the Bandit" is mentioned in these lyrics with the line "Even Burt Reynolds in that black Trans-Am". Reynolds' character drives Pontiac Trans-Am.
