"I'm On Fire" lyrics
"I'm On Fire"
Hey, little girl, is your daddy home?
Did he go away and leave you all alone?
I got a bad desire
Oh, oh, oh
I'm on fire
Tell me now, baby, is he good to you?
And can he do to you the things that I do?
Oh no, I can take you higher
Oh, oh, oh
I'm on fire
Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull
And cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my skull
At night, I wake up with the sheets soakin' wet
And a freight train runnin' through the middle of my head
Only you can cool my desire
Oh, oh, oh
I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh
I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh
I'm on fire
Ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

This song was originally meant to be on the Nebraska album, and it was recorded in May 1982, but was eventually released on Born In The U.S.A. in 1984.
To finish this song Bruce Springsteen tried to come up with a slow Johnny Cash-inspired rhythm which would fit to some lyrics he had already written. The result went well commercially, and the song reached the Top 10 in both the US and UK.
The
music video for this track was the first one when Bruce Springsteen acted. The story is similar to the theme of
Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" clip, where an auto mechanic longs for a married woman who brings her car in for service.
The music video for "I'm On Fire" won for Best Male Video at the second MTV Video Music Awards, held in 1985.
Johnny Cash covered this song on "Badlands: A tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska" album in 2000.
When
AWOLNATION covered "I'm On Fire" in 2015 for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" soundtrack, their leader Aaron Bruno told Billboard magazine,
"It's a song I've always loved, and someone gave me an opportunity to interpret it my way and see what happens." He added,
"I just made it moody and kind of lo-fi and trippy and dark, and in my mind there was no way they were going to use it. But they liked it, and I felt blessed to have a reason to do that song my way."
