"Still on Stage" lyrics

At the age of three
They both agreed
She had something special
A spark in the eye
To mark their pride
A deal with the devil
By the age of six
She knew the tricks
To impress her folks
It was no joke
When, to her, they'd say
'My girl, you're made for stage'

When ten came around
They put her name down for prizes
She learned by heart
The leading parts
No surprises
On performing nights
Always right in the front row
They'd watch the show
To see her glow

On the stage
Still on stage
Centre stage
There's a cage
Where the heart beats
On the stage

Leaving home for the big smoke
And the bright lights
So many shows, so many folk
So many white nights
People clapped
And how they came to learn her name
This fragile flame
Finding fame
On the stage
Years went by
And how she tried to get used to it
With prying eyes, and flashing lights
Sometimes she was losing it
Life's a puzzle
When they all want a little piece
And for a little peace
She met their needs

On the stage
Still on stage
Centre stage
There's a cage
Where the heart beats
On the stage

She met a man
And without a plan
They made a family
Focus changed when the kids came
To set her free
From the old stories

On the stage
Still on stage
Centre stage
There's a cage
Where the heart beats
On the stage
