John Fogerty said that this song is about "the apocalypse that was going to be visited upon us".

The song reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number one on the UK Singles Chart.

John Fogerty sometimes sings the last line of the chorus as "there's a bathroom on the right" during concerts because that line is often misheard. The correct line is "there's a bad moon on the rise" of course.

This track has been recorded by more than 20 different artists, in styles ranging from folk to reggae to psychedelic rock. Some films also feature this song on their soundtracks, e.g. "Blade" (1998), "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002), "Kong: Skull Island" (2017).
