""Heroes"" lyrics
""Heroes""
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them just for one day
We can be heroes just for one day
And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes, we're lovers, and that is that
Though nothing will keep us together
We could steal time just for one day
We can be heroes forever and ever
What d'you say?
I, I wish you could swim
Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim
Though nothing, nothing will keep us together
We can beat them forever and ever
Oh, we can be heroes just for one day
I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can be heroes, just for one day
We can be us just for one day
I, I can remember (I remember)
Standing by the wall (By the wall)
And the guns shot above our heads (Over our heads)
And we kissed as though nothing could fall (Nothing could fall)
And the shame was on the other side
Oh, we can beat them forever and ever
Then we could be heroes just for one day
We can be heroes
We can be heroes
We can be heroes just for one day
We can be heroes
We're nothing, and nothing will help us
Maybe we're lying, then you better not stay
But we could be safer just for one day
Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, just for one day
Writer(s): David Bowie, Brian Peter George Eno
This song was inspired by an incident when David Bowie was in Berlin and saw Tony Visconti (producer/engineer) kissing Antonia Maaß (backing vocalist) by the Berlin Wall. The Rolling Stone magazine described the song, "Bowie wails with crazed soul about two doomed lovers finding a moment of redemption together — just for one day." Doomed, because Visconti was married.
This song, along with the entire album, was written in a cheap rented apartment in Berlin, where David Bowie decided to take a break from touring and have some rest from fame.
David Bowie's vocal performance on this song was produced by placing three microphones at different distances away from him: 9 inches, 20 feet and 50 feet. The first was turned on for the quieter vocals, the second on the louder passages, and all three on the loudest parts.
The guitar part on this track was played by Robert Fripp (
King Crimson).
Brian Eno (
Roxy Music) helped David Bowie write and produce this song as well as his albums "Low", "Heroes" and "Lodger". He moved to Berlin with Bowie to work with him.
There are German and French versions of this song entitled "Helden" and "Héros" respectively.
When this song was performed at the concert in Berlin in 1987, the stage was right at the Berlin Wall, and not only the audience could listen to the music, but also the East Berliners could hear it. David Bowie said in his Performing Songwriter interview, "And there were thousands on the other side that had come close to the wall. So it was like a double concert where the wall was the division. And we would hear them cheering and singing along from the other side."
The first music video for this song aired on "Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas" special in 1977 where David Bowie also sang a duet mashup with Crosby titled "The Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth".
This song influenced
Moby (he has said that "'Heroes'" is one of his favourite songs ever written) and Dave Gahan of
Depeche Mode (he was hired to the band by Vince Clarke when the latter heard him singing "'Heroes'" at a jam session).
Apocalyptica recorded "Helden", the German version of this song, for their album "Worlds Collide" (2007) with Till Lindemann of
Rammstein on vocals.
