"Roman Candles" lyrics
"Roman Candles"
It's been a battle just to wake and greet the day
Then they all disappear like sugar in my coffee
(Sugar in my coffee)
A hint of sweetness but the bitterness remains
The acidity devouring my body
(Devouring my body)
But I am learning to let go
Of everything I tried to hold
Too long 'cause they all explode
Like roman candles
I used to feel everything like a flame
But now it's a struggle just to feel anything
(To feel anything)
I watch the world from a window on a hill
Everyone moving as I'm standing still
(I'm standing still)
But I am learning to let go
Of everything I tried to hold
Too long 'cause they all explode
Like roman candles
Ah-woo, ah-woo
Ah-woo, ah-woo
But I am learning to let go
Of everything I tried to hold
Too long 'cause they all explode
Like roman candles
Like roman candles

"Roman Candles" is the first single from Death Cab For Cutie's tenth studio album, "Asphalt Meadows". The song was premiered on May 11, 2022. Frontman Ben Gibbard explained the source of it, "The lyrics were cobbled from a couple of different songs dealing with my general sense of anxiety; the feeling that the fabric that weaves a functioning society together was crumbling during the pandemic."
"'Roman Candles' is about the crippling, existential dread that goes hand-in-hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet. And that the only way to be in the moment is to let it all go," the band said about this single.
