"Play" lyrics

"Play"

[Alan Watts:]
The physical universe is basically playful. There is no necessity for it whatsoever. It isn't going anywhere. That is to say, it doesn't have some destination that it ought to arrive at. But it is best understood by analogy of music. Because music, as an art form, is essentially playful. We say, "You play the piano", you don't work the piano. Why?

[Delta Goodrem:]
Awake at 3 AM
I'm missing home again
Is this the life that I had planned?
Doesn't matter what I've done
Or how many things I've won
'Cause in the end, I'd feel the same

When the lights go down
And they call last round
I hope I lived, hope I loved
As much as I, I could've
Without rushing to the end
Stayed true to who I am
I hope that I played

Hope that I played my favourite song
While dancing all night long
And laughed until I cried with my friends
'Cause when this story ends
It's easy to forget just how to play
So I'm just going to play

I'll play my symphony
Won't judge the melody
As long as it strikes a chord for me
See, my mum and dad, they told me
Regret will kill you slowly
Don't let it catch you in the end

So when the lights go down
And they call last round
Hope I lived, hope I loved
As much as I, I could've
Without rushing to the end
Stayed true to who I am
I hope that I play

I hope that I played my favourite song
While dancing all night long
And laughed until I cried with my friends
'Cause when this story ends
It's easy to forget just how to play
So I'm just gonna play, oh

When the lights go down
And they call last round

[Alan Watts:]
In music, though, one doesn't make the end of a composition the point of the composition. If that was so, the best conductors would be those who played fastest. And there would be composers who only wrote finales. People would go to a concert just to hear one crashing chord, 'cause that's the end. Same way in dancing, you don't aim at a particular spot in the room. That's where you should arrive. The whole point of the dancing is the dance

[Delta Goodrem (Alan Watts):]
I hope that I play, play, play
(But we missed the point the whole way along. It was a musical thing and you were supposed to sing or dance while the music was being played)
Just go and play
