"Bonjour" lyrics

I practiced it for twenty minutes on the plane
Bonjour, bonjour, like it was a difficult thing
And then the door opened and I said it wrong anyway
And you laughed and said it back correctly

I had a whole list of phrases in my notes app
Where's the station, thank you, one more please
None of them came out, not a single one
Just the first word and then nothing

Bonjour, bonjour, the simplest word and I forgot the rest
Bonjour, bonjour, you were standing there and my heart confessed
That I didn't come here just for the view
I think I came here just to say hello to you

Somebody said my accent was très mauvais
Then taught me how to order coffee properly
I've said it forty times since then, still wrong
But now I say it like I live here

It's a small word, it doesn't mean anything
Good day, that's all, everyone says it
But the first time you say it in a new city
It means I'm here, I made it, I exist

Bonjour, bonjour, the simplest word and I forgot the rest
Bonjour, bonjour, that's the only thing I got right yet
I didn't come here just for the view
I think I came here just to say hello to you

Every language starts with hello
Every friendship, every song
I've been trying to say more ever since
But hello did most of the work

Bonjour, bonjour, I still can't say the rest of it
Bonjour, bonjour, but you understood the whole of it
I didn't come here just for the view
I came here just to say hello to you
