"Clean Slate" lyrics
"Clean Slate"
This ain't the first time I felt my heart beat faster
Praying for the best, knowing most prayers don't get answered
I remember the fall and I remember getting back up after
Only a fool pretends like the past don't matter
I wanna love you like I've ever loved anyone
I wanna sing you like a song I ain't ever sung
I wanna love you like the first time I saw the sun rise
I wanna laugh with you like I don't know the punchline
I wanna give you my heart, unburdened by all the uncertainty we face
I wanna love you with a clean slate
I wanna love you with a clean slate
Like we ain't ever felt the cold when the sparks stopped
Like we ain't ever seen a gold band sitting in a pawn shop
Like temptation don't exist and we ain't ever felt lonely
Like I'm not afraid to let you really know me
I wanna love you like the first time I saw the sun rise
I wanna laugh with you like I don't know the punchline
I wanna give you my heart, unburdened by all the uncertainty we face
I wanna love you with a clean slate
I wanna love you with a clean slate
(I wanna love you like I've ever loved anyone)
(I wanna sing you like a song I ain't ever sung)
I wanna love you like the first time I saw the sun rise
I wanna laugh with you like I don't know the punchline
I wanna give you my heart, unburdened by all the uncertainty we face
Yeah, I wanna love you with a clean slate
I wanna love you with a clean slate
Yeah, I wanna love you with a clean slate
Yeah, I wanna love you with a clean slate
Writer(s): Jeremy Nathan Spillman, Tucker Beathard, Donovan Woods
"Clean Slate" was written by Donovan Woods with Jeremy Spillman and
Tucker Beathard. Woods told AmericanSongwriter.com about it,
"'Clean Slate' was an idea Jeremy Spillman and I started, and, really, we just had two lines: 'I wanna love you like first time I saw the sunrise, I wanna laugh with you like I don't know the punchline'. That took us all day to write, which like, isn't a bad day to me. Three or four months later Jeremy and I were writing with Tucker Beathard and we played him our two-line idea, and we figured out the rest of it. I was hoping we could capture that moment of boundless optimism at the beginning of a new relationship."
Donovan Woods explained, "This is a love song about falling in love and how it makes you feel like you're a new person. But slowly you realise you're still the same person with all the hang-ups you've always had, and it's a drag. It feels like the narrator will hear this song five years from now and feel embarrassed. What I love about it is that it feels like a very pure expression by someone with the best intentions."
