"Break On Through (To The Other Side)" lyrics
"Break On Through (To The Other Side)"
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run, tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah
We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
A-can you still recall time we cried?
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Hey!
Come on, yeah
Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby
She get high
She get high
She get high
She get high, yeah
I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chained us, eyes that lied
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, ow!
Aw yeah!
Made the scene, week to week
Day to day, hour to hour
Gate is straight, deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, break on through
Break on through, break on through
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah
Writer(s): Jim Morrison, John Paul Densmore, Raymond Manzarek, Robert Krieger
This song was the band's first single.
Jim Morrison said an interview with Hit Parader magazine in 1967 that he wrote this song while walking across bridges in Venice.
Robby Krieger's guitar playing on this song was inspired by the song "Shake Your Money Maker" by Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Krieger was a big fan of Butterfield.
The band's keyboard player Ray Manzarek borrowed the bass notes for this song from the song "What'd I Say" by
Ray Charles.
To promote the album, this song belongs to, Elektra Records used a billboard on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood with a photo of the band and the headline "The Doors Break On Through With An Electrifying Album". It was, perhaps, the first time when a rock band was advertised in that area, and it drew a lot of attention.
This song was included in a demo for Aura Records while The Doors were trying to get signed in 1965.
"Break On Through (To The Other Side)" was featured in a trailer for the animated film "Monsters, Inc." (2001).
