Jim Morrison came up with some lyrics for this song during a walk with Robby Krieger to Laurel Canyon. They went there because Morrison felt depressed that day, came to Krieger's place, and they decided to watch the sunset in the canyon.

Ray Manzarek (The Doors' keyboard player) produced a cover of this song by the band Echo & The Bunnymen. Their version was featured in the horror film "The Lost Boys" (1987) during a scene where a big poster of Jim Morrison can be seen.

This song is played in the film "Forrest Gump" (1994) when Forrest practices his ping-pong game skill.
