"The Unknown Soldier" lyrics

"The Unknown Soldier"

Wait until the war is over
And we're both a little older
The unknown soldier

Breakfast where the news is read
Television, children fed
Unborn living, living dead
Bullet strikes the helmet's head

And it's all over for the unknown soldier
It's all over for the unknown soldier, uh uh

March!
Company, halt!
Present arms!

Make a grave for the unknown soldier
Nestled in your hollow shoulder
The unknown soldier

Breakfast where the news is read
Television, children fed

Bullet strikes the helmet's head

And it's all over
The war is over
It's all over
War is over

It's all over, baby!
All over, baby!
Oh all right, yeah!
All over, yeah ha ha!
All over!
All over, baby!
Oh, oh yeah!
All over
All over
Yeah

This song is the first single from the album.
Jim Morrison wrote this song to describe how the Vietnam War was shown in the American society, e.g. on TV and in the news. Soldiers depicted in the media were unknown for most of the families who were sitting for breakfast and watching television.
The song contains military sounds: marching, commands, gun shots.
While this song was played on concerts, the band performed a little scene, where Jim Morrison would be "shot" by Robby Krieger, who used his guitar as a "rifle".
Producer Paul Rothchild was very particular about how this song should be recorded so that it took over 130 takes to finish.
