This song was written by guitarist Robby Krieger about fights with his girlfriend. It was originally named "Hit Me".

In addition to the use of brass and string instruments on this song Curtis Amy played saxophone solo at the end. Jim Morrison remarked that the song was the first rock hit with a jazz solo.

The song ends with Jim Morrison saying "Stronger than dirt!" This phrase comes from Ajax detergent commercial aired in 1968. The single doesn't have this line.

This single reached number three position on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1968, but it did not chart in the UK Singles Chart.

The song is featured on the soundtrack to the film "School Of Rock" (2003) where the main characters Dewey Finn played by Jack Black teaches one of his students how to play this song on the keyboard. The original song is included in the film's soundtrack.
