Speaking to Variety, Dua Lipa shared about "Illusion", "I felt very strong in the moment when I was writing that song, because it was really seeing past someone's bullshit, I guess, for lack of a better word. And understanding it for what it is and just entertaining it for the hell of it, even though you see what's happening." The song was released as the third single from her album "Radical Optimism" on the 11th of April, 2024. Its music video, directed by Tanu Muino, was filmed at the Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc in Barcelona, Spain.

"'Illusion' was the first song Caroline, Danny, Tobias, Kevin and I worked on together, and it really broke the ice for the record" said Dua Lipa about this song in press materials. "It's about knowing what you're getting yourself into, but staying for the hell of it. The joke's on them. It's the fun of playing someone at their own game because ultimately you won't fall for an illusion."
