"The Best Of My Love" lyrics
"The Best Of My Love"
Every night, I'm lying in bed
Holding you close in my dreams
Thinking about all the things that we said
And coming apart at the seams
We try to talk it over
But the words come out too rough
I know you were trying
To give me the best of your love
Beautiful faces and loud, empty places
Look at the way that we live
Wasting our time on cheap talk and wine
Left us so little to give
That same old crowd was like a cold dark cloud
That we could never rise above
But here in my heart
I give you the best of my love
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
You get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
You get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
(Ooh) I'm going back in time
And it's a sweet dream
It was a quiet night
And I would be all right
If I could go on sleeping
But every morning
I wake up and worry
What's gonna happen today?
You see it your way
And I see it mine
But we both see it slippin' away
(Ooh, ooh) You know we always had each other, baby
(Ooh, ooh) I guess that wasn't enough
Oh-uh-oh, but here in my heart
I give you the best of my love
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
You get the best of my love
(The best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
You get the best of my love
(The best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
Every night and day
You get the best of my love
(The best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
Oh-oh, oh-oh
(You get the best of my love)
(The best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
You get the best of my love
(The best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
Mm-mm-mm-mm-hmm
You get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling
(The best of my love)
You got it, you got it
You get the best of my love
(You get the best of my love)
Oh-oh-oh-oh, sweet darling...

This song was released as the third single from the album.
J.D. Souther said about the writing of "Best of My Love" in a 2009 interview,
"Glenn found the tune. The tune, I think, came from a Fred Neil record. We were working on that album ('On the Border') and came to London. The three of us were writing it and were on deadline to get it finished. I don't know where we got the inspiration."
Glenn Frey recalled how this composition came out,
"I was playing acoustic guitar one afternoon in Laurel Canyon, and I was trying to figure out a tuning that Joni Mitchell had shown me a couple of days earlier. I got lost and ended up with the guitar tuning for what would later turn out to be 'The Best of My Love'."
The maître d' of Dan Tana's Restaurant, Guido, got a 'thank you' in the liner notes of the album because, according to Don Henley, much of these lyrics were written in a booth in that restaurant which is close to the Troubadour night club.
This track became the band's first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single in March 1975.
