"Middle-Age Madness" lyrics

"Middle-Age Madness"

Middle-age madness is taking its toll
On a woman who'd rather return
To the nights when the breast of a tender, sweet mother
Could hold down a husband and raise up a son
So she turns to the mirror and smiles at the makeup
That covers up ten years or so
Then she gathers with barflies down at the tavern
In hopes a young charmer will carry her home

She's just changing the words to the tune she's been humming
For too many years now, it seems
Though the flower of her youth is beginning to wither
She still isn't too old to lie there and dream

Now she stands by her bedside, tripping on starlight
With soft, silky lace at her feet
Where laughter and covers of two lonely lovers
Living out scenes of their own fantasy
But in the cool morning hours, she sings in the shower
Just hoping that God understands
That the heaviest feeling a woman can carry
Is to be left with nothing but time on her hands

She's just changing the words to the tune she's been humming
For too many years now, it seems
Though the flower of her youth is beginning to wither
She still isn't too old to lie there and dream

Oh, and middle-age madness is taking its toll
On a woman who'd rather return
To the nights when the breast of a tender, sweet mother
Could hold down a husband and raise up a son
