"Castle On The Hill" lyrics
"Castle On The Hill"
When I was six years old I broke my leg
I was running from my brother and his friends
And tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass I rolled down
I was younger then
Take me back to when
I found my heart and broke it here
Made friends and lost them through the years
And I've not seen the roaring fields in so long
I know I've grown
But I can't wait to go home
I'm on my way
Driving at 90 down those country lanes
Singing to "Tiny Dancer"
And I miss the way
You make me feel
And it's real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Fifteen years old and smoking hand-rolled cigarettes
Running from the law through the backfields and getting drunk with my friends
Had my first kiss on a Friday night
I don't reckon that I did it right
I was younger then,
Take me back to when
We found weekend jobs, when we got paid
We'd buy cheap spirits and drink them straight
Me and my friends have not thrown up in so long
Oh, how we've grown
But I can't wait to go home
I'm on my way
Driving at 90 down those country lanes
Singing to "Tiny Dancer"
And I miss the way
You make me feel
And it's real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
One friend left to sell clothes
One works down by the coast
One had two kids but lives alone
One's brother overdosed
One's already on his second wife
One's just barely getting by
But these people raised me
And I can't wait to go home
And I'm on my way
I still remember these old country lanes
When we did not know the answers
And I miss the way
You make me feel
And it's real
When we watched the sunset over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill
Over the castle on the hill

Ed Sheeran said on BBC Radio 1's Breakfast Show, "This is a love song for Suffolk, because I don't think anyone has ever done that." He spent most of his childhood in the English countryside town of Framlingham, Suffolk.
The castle from this song is a medieval castle in the center of Framlingham, his home town.
The inspiration behind "Castle On The Hill" was explained by Ed Sheeran 97.1 AMP Radio: "There's a lot of positivity in my home town, but like, there's also a lot of sadness as well, whether it be people not coming back or people passing away or people not achieving what they could've achieved. So, I just wanted to touch on it a little bit, I guess."
Ed Sheeran explained the similarity to
U2 on this song,
"I grew up on Snow Patrol, I didn't grow up on U2, but I know that Snow Patrol grew up on U2, so I know [where] that influence had come [from]." He revealed that the direct influence of this track came from "Fallen Empires" by
Snow Patrol.
The
music video was filmed in Ed Sheeran's home town of Framlingham in Suffolk. Students from Thomas Mills High School, the educational establishment where he studied, are featured in the video.
This song was released as a double lead single from the album, along with "Shape of You". The song debuted at number six in the US, while "Shape of You" entered at number one making Ed Sheeran the first artist ever whose two songs debuted simultaneously in the US top 10.
