Unlike the usual way his song were created, when Elton John would compose a melody to Bernie Taupin's lyrics, this song's writing process began with a melody and some lyrics by John and finished with the help of Taupin who added some more lyrics. Taupin later recalled, "He was messing around on the piano one day and was playing something and asked me what did I think. It was actually pretty immediate: the title and the first couple of lines came into my head in a way that I guess I felt they were already there and just needed a little prompting."

The British boy band Blue made a very successful cover of this song as a duet with Elton John in 2002. That version reached the top of the UK Singles Chart.

Elton John and Ray Charles performed this song on Charles' duet album "Genius Loves Company" (2004). It was, perhaps, the last recording Charles did before his death in June 2004.
