"Tiny Dancer" lyrics
"Tiny Dancer"
Blue-jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty-eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must've seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Jesus freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for God
Turning back, she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad
Piano man, he makes his stand
In the auditorium
Looking on, she sings the songs
The words she knows, the tune she hums
But, oh, how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Blue-jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty-eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must've seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand
Oh, how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
When I say softly slowly
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Hold me closer, tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
You had a busy day today
Ooh

Writer(s): Elton John, Bernard J.p. Taupin
Bernie Taupin drew the inspiration for this song from his visit to Los Angeles in the autumn of 1970. He was single and there were a lot of young women around, and the weather was sunny, so he wanted to convey that spirit in a song. The song is dedicated to Maxine Feibelman who he met at the time and who became his girlfriend and wife later.
"Tiny Dancer" was popularized in the film "Almost Famous" (2000, director Cameron Crowe) which tells a story about a rock band from the 1970s. When Elton John got to know that it was used in the film he exclaimed, "I used to play 'Tiny Dancer' in England and it would go down like a lead zeppelin! Cameron resurrected that song."
This song was referenced to in the single "Castle on the Hill" by
Ed Sheeran in 2017.
